Tanya Banks-Christensen
- Captain: A
native of Philadelphia, and a cum-laude graduate of Alfred College,
Tanya Banks-Christensen served as SULTANA’S First Mate in
2004 and Alternate Captain in 2008 before taking command for the 2009
season. Tanya has an impressive sailing resume that includes previous
service as the Executive Captain of the schooner
Quinnipiack out
of New Haven, Connecticut. Tanya has also served as Mate on several
traditional sailing vessels including the schooners PROVIDENCE,
A.J. MEERWALD, WESTWARD and SPIRIT OF
MASSACHUSETTS. Tanya holds a United States Coast Guard 200 Ton
Near Coastal Master’s License. |

David Goldman - "Chief Mate":
David Goldman comes to Sultana with a varied background in
sailing having served as Third Mate aboard the schooners Spirit of
Massachusetts and Lettie G. Howard. With sailing
experience that spans the western Atlantic from Gloucester,
Massachusetts to Costa Rica, and includes time on all five of
the great lakes, Goldman brings an impressive resume to
Sultana. David holds a 100 ton Near Coastal Masters License. |

Kirstin L. Schoeninger – Education Director:
A Magna Cum Laude graduate of La Salle University with a degree
in Communications, Kirstin Schoeninger brings a strong
background in education to her new role on Sultana. Schoeninger
has previously worked with the Philadelphia Phantoms,
Work for Progress, and comes to us most recently from
Echo Hill Outdoor School, where she was a teacher and staff
naturalist. Ice hockey and rugby have been among Kirstin’s
outdoor activities as both player and coach. |

Emma
Bishop – Deckhand/Educator:
Biology and research interests prevail in Emma’s background and
she holds a BA in Biology from Oberlin College, Ohio. Her
experiences include AmeriCorps Conservation Intern; Deckhand
with Sea Education Association; Teaching Assistant for Genetics,
Evolution and Ecology; Camp Counselor at a German Immersion
Camp; and Research at Shoals Marine Lab in Maine. Emma enjoys
photography, German language and literature, and folk dance and
music. |

Emily
Floore - Deckhand/Educator:
Emily comes to us from Mount Pleasant, SC and has a Bachelor of
Arts in Political Science from the College of Charleston, SC.
Emily has strong experience as an educator working with the
South Carolina Maritime Foundation, the 21st Century
Spirit Ocean Adventure, and the Sewee Visitor Center in SC.
She has studied in the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland,
Australia, and studied the conservation efforts in the
Australian Rainforest. Emily has a strong desire to continue
her teaching of students about the world that surrounds them. |

Betsy
Stables - Deckand/Educator:
Betsy hails from North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in
History from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC.
Betsy has trained with the Kalmar Nyckel Crew for square-rig
sailing which supplemented her experience of sloop day-sailing
and cruising she gained from NC State University Sailing Club.
She has a strong background in Colonial, Revolutionary, and
Civil War history, has worked in making items of Civil War dress
for reenactments, and provides living history demonstrations to
the public in special event settings. |

Evan
Conklin – Deckhand/Educator:
Evan hails from Boyne City, Michigan, and graduated from Albion
College, Albion, Michigan as a Chemistry major. Evan has
extensive sailing experience and worked with the Extension 4-H
Sailing in Boyne City as the Sail School Head Instructor
managing eight sailing instructors and teaching 8-19 year-olds
how to sail. A strong community volunteer, Evan worked in
Northern Michigan Regional Hospital, volunteered as a sailing
instructor, and assisted with Community Christmas for less
fortunate families in the Boyne City area.
