For the past eight years Sultana Projects has marked the close of its sailing season by hosting our annual Downrigging Weekend “Tall Ships” festival over the first weekend in November. This year we will begin a new tradition with our first ever “Uprigging Weekend,” scheduled for April 3 & 4, 2009. Uprigging Weekend will celebrate the first weekend of Sultana’s new sailing season and will be a great chance to meet our Captain and crew for 2009. Schedule of Events for Uprigging Weekend MEET THE CREW RECEPTON – Friday, April 3, 2009 / 5:00-7:30pm / free as space permits: Join us onboard for a special fireside reception to meet the new Captain and Crew of the schooner Sultana (Did you know there was a working brick fireplace on Sultana?). Light refreshments will be provided and the crew will be giving in-depth, behind-the-scenes tours of the schooner. This event corresponds with “First Friday’s Chestertown” so it’s a great time to come visit downtown Chestertown while you see Sultana. This event takes place onboard Sultana at the Cannon Street Pier in Chestertown. MUSIC AT THE SULTANA CENTER – Friday, April 3, 2009 / 5:00-7:30pm / free as space permits: The Sultana Center at 107 South Cross Street will reopen for the season on Friday, April 3. Join us for refreshments and live bluegrass at the Center from 5:00-8:00pm as part of First Fridays Chestertown. JOHN SMITH SHALLOP AT THE FOOT OF CANNON STREET – Friday & Saturday, April 3 & 4 Come watch Sultana’s volunteers as they work on Sultana’s replica of John Smith’s 1608 shallop. The shallop will be at the foot of Cannon Street Friday and Saturday and visitors are encourage to talk with the shipwrights and volunteers as they prepare the shallop for a year-long exhibit at the Calvert Marine Museum. CHILDREN’S OPEN HOUSE ON SULTANA – Saturday, April 4, 2009 / 9:00am – 12:00pm / free as space permits: This is going to be a lot of fun! Bring your child of any age for a free, fun-filled time on Sultana. Onboard you and your children will be able to see and handle live fish pulled from the Chester River, try your hand a raising and lowering Sultana’s sails, dress yourself in 18th century sailor’s clothing, help make “hard-tack,” and more! This event takes place onboard Sultana at the Cannon Street Pier in Chestertown.
